Naming

He was sitting in front of a 3D printing machine that was reading a design and transforming it from bits to atoms. He suddenly got thoughtful.

It is when you name a thing that it becomes a thing. Before that, it is a mixture of other things. It is a material - plastic, metal, or wood. It is a set of things put together in a way that it does something different than what it did on its own.

Naming is powerful. It infuses a thing with a soul. Not soul as used in a spiritual sense. But, an identity.

This works in the sense of a machine workshop. Does it work in other contexts? Usually does.

The machine stopped making the noises it does when work is in progress. The task was done. A green light on the instrument panel confirmed his observation.

He picked the thing from inside and carried it to the integration bay. The part he built was an engine that would power a spacecraft on its journey from the Earth to the Moon.
