Monsoon Musings: A Rainy Saturday in Pune

There’s something magical about waking up to the sound of rain in Pune—especially on a Saturday. The usual buzz of the city takes a backseat as the clouds roll in, softening the morning light and slowing the pace of everything. It's as if the city itself sighs in relief, wrapped in a grey, drizzling blanket.
The day begins with that unmistakable petrichor—earth’s perfume after the first drops kiss the dusty roads. Trees in Koregaon Park look greener, their leaves glistening like they've just had a spa day. Tea stalls come alive earlier than usual, with crowds gathering under tarpaulin shelters, hands wrapped around steaming kulhads of masala chai, laughter mingling with the pitter-patter above.
For Punekars, a rainy Saturday isn’t a day lost—it’s a day reimagined. Breakfast becomes a slow, indulgent affair—think hot sabudana khichdi or piping poha paired with freshly fried kanda bhajis. Cafés across FC Road and Viman Nagar fill with people cosying up with books, conversations, or just watching raindrops race down glass panes.
The city’s vibe shifts. Roads may get puddled, but the spirit soars. College students pull out their hoodies and head to rooftop cafés, while couples share umbrellas at Pashan Lake. For some, it’s the perfect day to escape to nearby Mulshi or Lavasa, where the rain feels even more poetic amidst mist-covered hills.
By evening, the city glows under diffused streetlights reflecting in rain-soaked streets. Local musicians and open mic artists take refuge in tucked-away venues, singing melancholic tunes that seem to match the weather perfectly. Instagram fills with snapshots of fog, filter coffee, and window views.
A rainy Saturday in Pune isn’t just about weather—it’s a whole mood. It’s about slowing down, reconnecting, and letting the rhythm of the rain dictate the pace of the day. Whether you're tucked in with a novel, out for a rainy drive, or simply soaking it all in from your balcony, Pune in the rain makes you feel like the main character in a monsoon movie.

I enjoy driving in Bangalore more than anywhere else. I know, you must be thinking I am crazy. “Poor guy has gone crazy after coding day and night and not getting paid.” Well, that might be happening to a certain extent. But more on that later, if ever.
