Smart Watches

I have to wear this Apple Watch for a work thing.

Now, I am not a fan of smart watches in general - its just another screen that distracts me from another screen that is distracting me from what I am supposed to do.

But now that I am stuck with this thing for 24 hrs., I would like to see the silver lining.

Just to be clear - I am not against the device and what it is designed to do, per se.

The engineering that has gone into this particular device is remarkable - to say the least.

All that data - gathering it, collating it, making sense of it and then helping the user use it - and doing it well, is no mean feat. Even for a massive company like Apple.

But, my respect for the hardware is not just outweighed, but thrown out the door by my peeves when it comes to smart watches.

Why is the screen so fiddly? Why is your battery life 1 fuckin day? Why is your tactile feel not very satisfying, with some notable exceptions? Why are these things getting bigger and bigger to a point where it feels like my wrist is being weighed down by this? Why are you trying to do everything that a phone does and then doing it badly?

For me, I don’t think these things are at a point where they will replace my solar powered mechanical watches. There is something timelessly elegant about those machines that this electronic gizmo does not replace or mimic.

So all that said, this device will go back to the research team, and I will happily be back to wearing my $60 Casio watch. Little joys like that.

Embracing Life Beyond the Highlights

Time has started to fly lately and I do not mean it in the cliched, overused way. I really feel that because of the constant overconsumption of information, in terms of reels, commercials, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, TV, gripping series, and so on. I remember our school period ...

On satisficing — a bet on human irrationality

When consumers can’t determine the optimal solution, they give a brand the power of their decisions. It’s why many choose Apple, because they’ve abrogated the rationality of choice. This has to be viewed with care though. The corollary of it is valid too. Think about the below st...

Wonderment

11 years ago, I recall my first day at Novartis' head office in Worli. It was my first experience in a corporate setting, my internship that was going to get me my first paycheck. It was thrilling and exciting, and I felt like the world was my playground. I remember having a new ...
