OTB Day#10 Conclusion : Fitness for the Corporate Slaves
As we wrap up the "Off The Ball" series, it's time to reflect on how the lessons from football can transform not just our game, but our lives, especially for those of us entrenched in the corporate grind. This isn't a summary of past discussions, but rather a personal story that I hope resonates with many of you.
A Typical Day in the Corporate World
For many of us, a typical day involves sitting at a desk for 10-11 hours, and our bodies in a constant state of stress. We're perpetually in fight-or-flight mode, worrying about deadlines, performance reviews, and the relentless rat race. We strive to outdo our past selves and our peers, often at the expense of our well-being.
To cope, we indulge in unhealthy, high-calorie foods as a reward for surviving another tough day or week.
A Personal Journey to Health
My journey towards better health began in earnest after the COVID-19 pandemic. The importance of a robust immune system and overall good health became glaringly apparent, especially after a bout with malaria that landed me in the hospital last year. It was a wake-up call that prompted me to take my health seriously.
Football: A Catalyst for Change
Football became my unexpected ally in this journey. It wasn't just a sport; it was a lifeline that helped me regain confidence and improve my work performance. It allowed me to apply the lessons from countless motivation and self-help books in a practical, enjoyable way. Unlike my corporate job, football was a project without the pressure of performance or financial dependency. It was pure fun.
I defined success on my terms: simply reaching the football ground was a victory, regardless of how I played compared to others. This mindset shift allowed me to savor small victories and apply the same principles to my work life, ultimately enhancing my performance there as well.
Few things I have achieved in 12 months of sincere football training
I start my day early, with 6 AM football practice session thrice a week. This also helps start my work early. Having peaceful 1-2 hours before your colleagues and clients start sending emails and calling is a cheat code for high productivity
I have lost 9-10 KGs in 12 months, and this is without any diet or sacrificing eating what I like
Have made like minded frens and of different age groups. This helps to remind that what worries us is temporary. Things dont matter after few years
When I started giving priority to myself. To my health, my mental peace, my productivity at work, my quality time with family I had to let go of few things too, like -
Drinking - its been 2+ years I am clean, and proud of it
Have cut down on many social gatherings. Football consumes a lot of time and energy. It was either-or. Keeping up with both would have had impact on health in bad way
In some ways football has also helped me control my emotional responses to things not going my way. Sh*t happens.
I feel I am a very different person, and still work in progress for what I wish to become
The CEO of You
Consider yourself the CEO of a product called "YOU." We often prioritize the well-being of our loved ones, but it's crucial to extend that care to ourselves. We can only give what we have, and being healthy and happy is essential to fostering the same in those around us.
In conclusion, the lessons from football and the "Off The Ball" series are not just about improving your game on the field. They're about enhancing your life off the field, especially in the corporate world. By focusing on the fundamentals, embracing persistence, and defining success on your terms, you can transform your life, just as I did. Remember, the journey to health and happiness is ongoing, and it's one worth taking.
