Closed lids
One day at school, I guess I must have been 14-ish - there was an announcement about auditions for an intra-school English drama competition. I got to know about it and understood the required prerequisites. A senior friend asked if I would be interested in trying this new experience. I have been told I have this intense "thinking face" that screams "Do Not Disturb" (but to be frank here, I am usually just pondering my next snack).
Anyway, I smiled and denied it. And that's it, nothing about it. Not that I was a shy or introvert, but just another kid unnecessarily underestimating myself in doing anything new! At home that evening, very casually told all this to my mother, with a “by the way” attitude. Not expecting anything out of the chat really. Just another casual school day update. Surprisingly, and I was least prepared for this - she pounced on me,
“See, if you possess and want to sell cashews but keep your fist closed and remain silent, who will know what you have to offer? And you won’t be able to sell such precious cashews. On the other hand, someone else has petty groundnuts to sell but confidently announces it, everyone will be aware and even be interested! Be open to experiment varied opportunities, don't underestimate the inner potential. Communicate openly, confidently!”
Cashews? Groundnuts? What!
“Go and connect with your senior tomorrow, register for this audition, and give it a try. Let's see”. And I did.
I was selected for the play, we practiced for a month, and we were part of the competition. And 🏆 won the 1st prize. I never really got into acting after that, but it's still a fun story my mom loves to tell. Seriously, ask her about it next time you see her.
Much like a closed lid conceals the contents within, people often keep their talents, ideas, and unique qualities hidden due to fear of judgment, self-doubt, or lack of confidence, maybe. To truly showcase what’s inside, we need to "open the lid" – take risks, share our strengths, and step beyond our comfort zones!
Oh yes, I understand, not everyone needs to "open the lid" to find success or showcase anything. Some people thrive in environments where they can work quietly and independently, without the pressure of showcasing their talents publicly. They find fulfillment in stability and routine, and that's perfectly valid. For my type, since this ‘drama’ incident and many such, now it's always about self-experimenting, trying new things, taking calculated risky decisions when need be, and not allowing any regret to creep in the future for not trying.
Keeps life interesting!

Gift of Confidence
As a kid, I was very sure of my abilities as well as inabilities. I knew I was good at math and knew I was terrible at drawing. I could see that in the speed with which I could solve math problems and also could see it in the horrible color combination I used for modern art class...

I am here. I am sorry, I am not here for you. I am here for myself. I made a promise. I want to keep it. I am setting expectations - again more mine than yours. It takes away the performance pressure. It’s ok if you don’t read further. I am writing this more for me than for you...
