Books of 2024 - Book 11

So, a new friend suggested this book when I mentioned I love fiction. I had a solo trip to Mumbai coming up and figured I'd have some downtime, so I needed a new read. I ordered Sunlight On A Broken Column by Attia Hosain from Amazon, and it arrived just in time, two nights before my trip.

I haven't read A Suitable Boy but I did watch the Netflix series, and this book has a similar vibe. It's about Laila, an orphan from a distinguished Muslim family, and it follows her life from her teenage years through to adulthood, all set against the backdrop of the 1940s. We see how her freedom ebbs and flows based on her guardians' beliefs. Her aunt starts off strong but ends up with little control over her own marriage. The book also touches on how partition and new laws impact their lives. Just yesterday I was listening to Amit Verma’s podcast The Seen and the Unseen episode with Shephali Bhatt. They were discussing this Urdu word “Thehrao” (a pause after thunder). Shephali beautifully explained how a person’s way of talking will have thehrao after they have “lived” a life. This reminded me of this book and how turbulent lives people of that era lived.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book.

Books of 2024 : Book 13

Around halfway through the book, lovers split. The reason for splitting is too cliched and reminded me of our Saas-Bahu dramas. I almost thought of quitting and not reading further but read on to complete the book 😅. The book does pick up a little later.

Here is a short non-spoiler of“The Paper Menagerie”. This story is about a boy and his mom. As a kid, his mom is his world. She has made these paper animals for him to play with. Most of the time these lifelike paper animals are his only playmates. They also signify the con...

Books of 2024 - Book 12 and 13

This one was a gem. It's kind of based on Jerry Pinto’s own life and revolves around a family of four. There's Em, the mom dealing with mental illness; The Big Hoom, the dad who’s always got it together; and their two kids, the protagonist and his older sister. The way the book i...

Pukhtunwali

As anyone growing up in 90’s India, I could do the Pathan accent. The images of Kabuliwalah and Khuda Gawah in equal measure and the romance of thinking of distant peoples whose lives could not be more different than yours.

Kolhapur

When you read a book and it describes a place, a real city where things happen, how closely does the reader experience the city? How close can a reader really get?
