Books of 2024 - Book 12 and 13

Just finished listening to Episode 314: The Life and Times of Jerry Pinto, and it was so good that I had to check out a couple of his books.

Em and the Big Hoom

This one was a gem. It's kind of based on Jerry Pinto’s own life and revolves around a family of four. There's Em, the mom dealing with mental illness; The Big Hoom, the dad who’s always got it together; and their two kids, the protagonist and his older sister. The way the book is written feels like a conversation, which I loved. Em’s random but deep life lessons were a highlight. Despite the tough times the family goes through, the book has this warm, cozy vibe.

Murder in Mahim

I haven’t read a mystery in ages, but this one brought back all the feels. Growing up, I was all about mystery books, starting with फास्टर फेणे!  Then read many Marathi translations of Sherlock Holmes. Naturally this was the first genre that I turned to when I first started reading English books in college. My dad has a big collection of Agatha Christie and Jeffrey Archer novels. I used to love reading Agatha Christie’s novels. Slowly as I started exploring other fictional genres in English, my love for murder mysteries went down a little.

Amit Verma mentioned this book a few times on the Seen and the Unseen podcast, and I was curious about a mystery set in Mumbai. Gave it a shot, and it didn’t let me down. Besides the murder mystery plot, it also dives into the gay scene in Mumbai, which added an interesting layer to the story.

Here is a short non-spoiler of“The Paper Menagerie”. This story is about a boy and his mom. As a kid, his mom is his world. She has made these paper animals for him to play with. Most of the time these lifelike paper animals are his only playmates. They also signify the con...

Books of 2024 : Book 13

Around halfway through the book, lovers split. The reason for splitting is too cliched and reminded me of our Saas-Bahu dramas. I almost thought of quitting and not reading further but read on to complete the book 😅. The book does pick up a little later.

Books of 2024 - Book 8

After I started my new job and with moving, it took a while to get back to reading. After a month have resumed reading regularly. Saw this in our bookshelf that Satya had newly organized. The book is little different than the genres I usually read and enjoy. But liked reading thi...

Books of 2024 - Book 9

I had bought this book a couple of years back but hadn’t read it till now. I have read all of Jane Austen’s books but had never read any other classic. The world that Charles Dickens has constructed is very different from Jane Austen’s. This feels more real even for today. But I ...

Day 13 - This n that

I am too immersed in book today to think or observe things to write about for the ongoing series. It’s about cooking, women and the misogynistic view of the country they staying in, and how it affects them deeply. It’s supposedly a thriller, but the repetitive cooking and descrip...

Difficult Questions

Kids ask the darndest of questions, I have always heard people say. Now, by a miracle of nature I have one of my own. And I am enjoying my fair share of laughter and dread pondering at some of these existential questions.
