Leaders

Indira Gandhi remains India’s first and only female Prime Minister.

And in a country like India, where women are still not treated as equal to men, that is celebrated.

But I want to argue against it - on multiple counts.

We have many more female role models, should we care to look closely. None attained the power that she did, but none should, in the manner that she did it.

My only exhortation to anyone who holds Indira Gandhi as a role model is please read more about her. From her economic policies to her political disasters, her time at the center of Indian politics is a dark one, for the most part.

Her assassination is a grave crime that cannot be undone. I would much rather she stood trial and went to prison for her offences. Wishful thinking.

Bharatnatyam Beginnings

“I don’t have a clear memory of my first dance lesson – I was just 5 and a half. But I do remember the sound of ‘Salangai,’ the clinking of bells that fascinated me and drew me to the class.…”
