Free Speech?

Another celebrity is the latest victim of India’s true culture.

One that binds us and unites us. One that we swear by and kill for.

Personal taste. Pet Peeves. Judgement.

Its a basic human trait, to be fair. No part of the world, however unexplored, is untouched by it.

But I am yet to find a people who use it for as many different purposes as Indians.

From concluding what one wants to eat, to getting offended about what one is eating.

Judgement is what brings us together. Because we, the janata, do it very well.

And we love to judicially legalize our judgement. We did not learn that from the british.

What we allow others to watch, and speak and breathe. Boy, don’t we love to legitimize our judgement.

Like a villain from some comic book, that is the only water which will sustain this national personality.

Drink on, India / Bharat / Hindustan. Raise that cup high and drink it with pride.

When was the last time a book made you question your own definition of freedom? For me, it happened somewhere between the first and last page of Pooja Gowda’s debut memoir, The Great Indian Naturist: A Secret Life Unveiled. It’s not every day you come across a book that dares to ...

There’s a peculiar comfort in leafing through a book that feels like both a mirror and a map. I didn’t expect a book on the Constitution to make me pause mid-page and reflect on my own life, but that’s exactly what happened with Why the Constitution Matters by Justice D.Y. Chandr...

Feast of Vultures

The synthesis of an investigative journalists forays into the depths of corruption in India. In a sense the book lays bare what we already, inherently know.

I opened Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored expecting a polite Bollywood memoir — the kind that tiptoes around gossip and glosses over the messy bits. Instead, I found myself sitting beside Chintu, a glass of whiskey in hand, in a smoky green room, watching him spill every s...
