Write your own guidebook

Cal Newport, in his podcast "Deep Questions," introduces the concept of maintaining a document where one can record multi-scale planning, vision, and mission statements.

Oliver Burkeman, in his book "Four Thousand Weeks," talks about the concept of finitude, which pertains to the intrinsic limitations or boundaries inherent in human existence. The certainty of mortality serves as the ultimate boundary to human life, highlighting the finite nature of our time on this planet. The Internet, and social media in particular, often foster the illusion that it is possible to achieve and experience everything. However, it is crucial to recognize that this is not attainable due to the constraints of finitude.

It is vital to designate specific times for creation and consumption. Moreover, consumption should be guided by a deliberate intent. By adhering to these principles, one can effectively mitigate the fear of missing out (FOMO).

Thus, my guidebook will encompass the following elements:

  • Purpose

  • Multi-scale planning (Weekly, Monthly, Seasonal goals)

  • A media consumption funnel

  • Mental models for consumption-related decision-making
