How to get better at marketing — for beginners

Here’s an oversimplified view of all things marketing for beginners. You can do two kinds of marketing: content, performance. Content is a generation engine — where you conjure words to explain what your product does, how it’s different, and why it’s better. Performance helps in distributing said content to the right people. The two work together, because without distribution, you’re screaming off an ivory tower, but no one can hear you.

For content: You need to read a lot, understand competition, write well and be able to have the foresight and insight into where your org stands compared to the rest.

For performance: You need to understand a bunch of tools, and how they help in increasing eyeballs. So, SEO, PR, social media, events marketing et al fall in this bucket.

My simple advice: If you have the gift of the written word, pursue content.
