Day 5 - Feast at the temple
A trip to native is never complete without having the festival lunch at temple. The sadya served is considered tasty and precious gift from the Creator and hence the seniors in the family make sure that we attend it atleast once or maybe more in a year.
It’s suffocating for me to think about visiting the temple in the sweltering heat, wearing traditional clothes(which until recently I couldn’t avoid and had to obey meekly), wait among the crowd till food is served, sit on the bare ground (some temples have cemented while others have sandy grounds), eat the food in that padmasan which is an exercise in itself. Yet, we do the ceremony in hushed silence.
As with age, the wise cells in me thinks about how luxurious it might have been for the elders to have this feast for free in the olden times, where there was no Zomato or Swiggy or fine dining restaurants to replenish their taste buds. The busy weekdays and weekends goes away in struggling to meet their ends and also to do household chores, house repairs, visiting friends and family.
To look back these rituals which they performed, attached with some core memories which they do not share much to the younger generations, the temple feast is a nostalgic event for the parents and grandparents. And learning to be in the present and savor each moment, we are now doing exactly how they want us to be, keeping all the frustrations aside. Just like how they move around with us in the big malls and other crowded places just to please their grandkids.
